OUR NEXT ‘INTRODUCTION TO BEEKEEPING’ COURSE STARTS MARCH / APRIL 2027
These Wednesday evening sessions will be held at a venue near Southend in Essex
But be under no illusion, beekeeping is a complex and demanding undertaking.
It will not suit those who are seeking a hobby that can be attended to intermittently.
From March to July you must expect to handle your bees at least once a week. They are livestock and their care must be undertaken with due regard for animal welfare, responsible management and, where applicable, relevant legislation.
The first step towards keeping bees is a training course.
The Southend & District Beginners Course is based on the British Beekeepers Association recommended studies at Beginner and Improver level and covers all of the training necessary to get a new beekeeper up and running.
Our Beginners Course
Usually held in March or April, our friendly four-week beginners’ theory course is a great way to discover the essentials of beekeeping in the company of both new and experienced beekeepers. No previous experience is needed, and together with the practical sessions that follow, the course will help you build the knowledge and confidence to look after your bees safely and responsibly.
Follow up training is also available to members of the Division and covers subjects such as Extracting Honey, Preparing Bees for Winter and how to deal with the many pests and diseases that affect honeybees.
We strongly recommend that you take time to research whether beekeeping is for you before you book with us.

- ‘Haynes – The Bee Manual’ by C & A Waring (Please note: this book is free when attending the course)
Important:
We suggest that you do not buy any equipment until you’ve completed the course and had the chance to discuss options with experienced beekeepers. Mistakes can be very expensive!
We also kindly ask that you do not buy bees from elsewhere in the UK or from abroad. Bees from outside the local area may not be suited to conditions in Essex and could introduce disease, so choosing local bees helps protect both your colony and other bees nearby.
